Grace is God's Generous Love

Grace, at its heart, is God’s generous love continually given. The light that shines on us even when we don’t deserve or expect it. It’s not just about being gracious or understanding, but about receiving and recognizing the divine love that surrounds us and flows through us.

This week’s gathering took place in the gentle spirit of Thanksgiving, a time to pause, reflect, and give thanks for the countless ways grace shows up in our lives.

Each person was invited to bring something they were thankful for: an item, a word, or simply a thought to place in the center of our circle. For those who didn’t bring a tangible object, we took a moment to call something to mind, a memory or blessing that spoke of grace and we used it this week as our sacred word or symbol to lift up in thanks. This worked really well for our group and we found that it allowed us to shed new light on new yet recent experiences that we hadn't thought about yet: time with family, and the simple things in life that we often take for granted, especially in such a busy holiday season.

The Light of Grace in Centering Prayer

Alongside your sacred word of thanksgiving, imagining a warm light of God’s grace surrounding you is also a powerful and comforting image as you center that can take you deeper into prayer. A reminder that His presence is both near and constant, illuminating even the quiet spaces within. Here is part of our visualization that we used to settle in to guide you:

"Imagine a gentle light glowing at the center of your chest, steady and warm. With each breath, the light grows brighter, spreading softly through your body. You feel its warmth encasing you: calm, safe, held.

Now, imagine that light extending beyond you, joining with the light of those gathered here, until the whole room glows with a shared warmth.

This light is grace: God’s love freely flowing through and between us. It shines on each of us equally: on our joys, our fears, our hopes, and even our hurts."

Exploring Further in Reflection

After our twenty minutes of silence, we reflected on a passage from One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp, a reading that deeply resonated with the group, especially its final line as we think of the light of grace in centering prayer:

"Grace is a gift that is always being given, but we must be open to receive it. Gratitude is the lens through which we recognize grace in its countless forms: the light through the cracks, the ordinary made holy. When we give thanks, we enter into the rhythm of grace itself, a continual receiving and returning of love.

The truly saved see grace everywhere and in everything".

How Grace Appears

That final phrase sparked meaningful conversation. We spoke about how grace often appears in unexpected places: in the mundane, in relationships, and even in moments of struggle and posed the question, do we always see it? Do we naturally have that awareness? What distracts us from seeing grace? Though we didn’t spend much time describing the objects in front of us, the stories and reflections that followed were heartfelt and moving, reminding us that gratitude itself is a form of prayer, a way of recognizing God’s continual presence in all things.

As we head into Thanksgiving, may we continue to see grace everywhere and in everything, in each breath, each connection, and each act of love that flows through our days.
